Six questions spread across the four chapters of the official OMPT-C syllabus — heaviest where the exam is heaviest. Every solution is fully worked and open by default; fold it away if you want to try the question on paper first. No calculator: that's the condition you'll sit under.
Numbers · Question 1
The price of a jacket is reduced by 15%. During a clearance, the reduced price is cut by a further 10%. By what percentage has the original price been reduced in total?
Worked solution
- A 15% reduction means you pay 85% of the price: multiply by 0.85.
- A further 10% off the reduced price means multiplying by 0.90 — applied to what is left, not to the original.
- Chain the two factors: 0.85 × 0.90 = 0.765, so you end up paying 76.5% of the original price.
- Paying 76.5% means the total reduction is 100% − 76.5% = 23.5%.
The trap: the discounts do not add up to 25%. The second cut acts on an already reduced price, so the combined discount is always a little less than the sum.
Answer: 23.5%
Numbers · Question 2
Write √50 + √18 − √8 as a single simplified surd.
Worked solution
- Pull the largest square factor out of each root: √50 = √(25 × 2) = 5√2.
- Likewise √18 = √(9 × 2) = 3√2, and √8 = √(4 × 2) = 2√2.
- All three are now multiples of √2, so they combine like terms: 5√2 + 3√2 − 2√2 = 6√2.
On the real test you type the exact form — a rounded decimal like 8.49 would be wrong. This is what "checked by a CAS" means in practice.
Answer: 6√2
Algebra · Question 3
Expand and simplify: (2x − 3)(x + 5) − 2(x² + 4).
Worked solution
- Expand the product term by term: (2x − 3)(x + 5) = 2x² + 10x − 3x − 15 = 2x² + 7x − 15.
- Expand the second bracket: −2(x² + 4) = −2x² − 8.
- Add the two results: (2x² + 7x − 15) + (−2x² − 8) = 7x − 23. The x² terms cancel.
A quick sanity check with x = 1: original = (−1)(6) − 2(5) = −6 − 10 = −16, and 7(1) − 23 = −16. They agree.
Answer: 7x − 23
Algebra · Question 4
Simplify as far as possible: (x² − 9) / (x² + 3x).
Worked solution
- Factor the numerator — it is a difference of squares: x² − 9 = (x − 3)(x + 3).
- Factor the denominator — take out the common factor x: x² + 3x = x(x + 3).
- Cancel the shared factor (x + 3), which is valid whenever x ≠ −3: the fraction becomes (x − 3) / x, with x ≠ 0 as well.
Cancelling only works on factors, never on terms — you cannot cross out the x² on top and bottom. Factor first, then cancel.
Answer: (x − 3) / x
Linear formulas & equations · Question 5
A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (6, 13). Find its equation in the form y = ax + b.
Worked solution
- Slope first: a = (13 − 5) / (6 − 2) = 8 / 4 = 2.
- Find b by substituting one point, say (2, 5): 5 = 2 × 2 + b, so b = 1.
- Check with the other point: 2 × 6 + 1 = 13. Correct — so the line is y = 2x + 1.
The check in step 3 is not decoration: with typed exact answers, an arithmetic slip in the slope costs the whole question, and re-substituting the second point catches it in seconds.
Answer: y = 2x + 1
Basic geometry · Question 6
A 6.5 m ladder leans against a vertical wall, with its foot on horizontal ground 2.5 m from the base of the wall. How far up the wall does the ladder reach?
Worked solution
- The wall, the ground and the ladder form a right triangle with the ladder as hypotenuse. By the Pythagorean theorem: h² + 2.5² = 6.5².
- Compute the squares: 6.5² = 42.25 and 2.5² = 6.25, so h² = 42.25 − 6.25 = 36.
- Take the positive root (a height is positive): h = √36 = 6.
This is the 5–12–13 triangle scaled by one half (2.5–6–6.5). Spotting the classic triples saves you the squaring entirely — useful with no calculator of your own.
Answer: 6 m

Search for an OMPT-C mock exam PDF and most of what you'll find is the same document re-uploaded across different sites: a sample of the OMPT-A mock exam — 8 questions over 3 pages, answers written by hand. It's a fair first look at the official question style, but it samples a different variant: its syllabus is not the OMPT-C's four foundation chapters. The official omptest.org also sells its own practice modules and mock test.
The deeper limit is the format itself. A static PDF can't run the 120-minute clock, can't check a typed exact answer the way the real test's CAS does, can't enforce the on-screen-calculator rule, and can't score you by chapter. Those four things are most of what a mock exam is for. Ours is free, interactive, timed and corrected instantly — which is simply what the real sitting feels like.
Whatever materials you use, do at least one full-length, timed run before you book. Pacing is a skill, and paper can't train it.
