Retakes & attempts

Can you retake the OMPT?

Usually yes — the official default is up to 3 attempts — but the real answer belongs to your university, and some allow only 1 or 2. Below: how a resit actually works, the attempt limits we could verify (with a source per row), and what to change before you sit it again.

How a retake works.

Mechanically, a resit is a brand-new attempt: same store, same proctoring, same grading clock. Four things to know before you rebook, all from the official OMPT pages:

1

Every attempt is bought separately

The official pricing page is explicit: each test attempt has to be purchased separately — the bundle includes one attempt, not several. At the time of checking, an attempt costs €240 (OMPT-A/B/C/E/G) or €270 (OMPT-D/F) on omptest.org.

2

Rebook via the store, schedule via ProctorU

You buy the new attempt in the store on omptest.org, then schedule the proctored session — at least 72 hours in advance (short-notice scheduling exists but costs an extra fee). Full walkthrough: how to book the OMPT.

3

Grading takes up to 8 business days

The official process page: certificate and per-topic score arrive within 8 business days counted from the day after the test (a paid fast-grading option shortens this). Budget that delay before any university deadline.

4

Your attempt count is set by your programme

The official site itself warns that not every programme allows 3 attempts, and tells you to verify the entry requirements with your admissions office before purchasing an attempt. The verified exceptions are in the table below.

Attempts allowed, university by university.

Default: up to 3 attempts. Everything below is an exception (or a confirmation) we could verify on an official page in July 2026 — the source is linked on each row. If your programme isn't listed, assume nothing: ask admissions.

How to read this table: where a university publishes its own number, that page is the source; otherwise we cite the official omptest.org exceptions list. If the two sources ever disagree for your programme, treat the stricter one as the safe assumption — your admissions office has the final word either way. Policies change yearly; nothing here replaces the linked source or your admission letter.
Counting matters more when attempts are scarce: at ESE one attempt is the whole game, and a 2-attempt cap means a failed first sit leaves exactly one more. What "counts" as an attempt (per round, per year, lifetime) also varies — VU counts per admission round, Groningen per year. Ask your admissions office how your counter works.

What to do differently before your retake.

A resit with the same preparation is the same exam. No method guarantees a pass — but these five changes attack the reasons prepared people usually lose marks.

1

Start from your per-topic score

Your official certificate lists your score per topic. That's your syllabus for the resit: rebuild the two or three weakest topics first instead of re-reading everything you already knew.

2

Diagnose before you rebook

Before paying for another attempt, check where you stand today: our free 10-question practice test gives an instant per-topic breakdown for your variant. Free information first, paid attempt second.

3

Practise typing answers, not just solving

OMPT answers are typed and checked symbolically — a correct result in the wrong form scores zero. If your first attempt bled marks on entry format, drill the input mechanics, not more theory.

4

Sit a full timed mock before the real resit

Concentration over 120–180 proctored minutes is a trained skill. Run at least one full-length timed mock under exam conditions before spending a scarce real attempt.

5

Count backwards from your deadline

72 hours minimum to schedule, up to 8 business days to get the result: a resit needs roughly two weeks of runway before any university deadline. Check the calendar before you plan the maths.

FAQ

How many times can you take the OMPT?

The official default is up to 3 attempts, but exceptions are set per university: Erasmus School of Economics allows only 1, and Tilburg, AUC, VU, Groningen, RSM and others cap many programmes at 2 (see the sourced table above). Verify with your admissions office before purchasing an attempt — the official site itself tells you to.

Do I have to pay again for a retake?

Yes. Each test attempt is purchased separately on omptest.org — a resit means buying a new attempt in the store (€240 for OMPT-A/B/C/E/G, €270 for OMPT-D/F at the time of checking; the bundle includes one attempt only).

I failed the OMPT — what should I do first?

Three things before rebooking: confirm with admissions how many attempts you have left, read the per-topic score on your certificate to see exactly where the marks went, and rebuild those topics — then sit a timed mock before the real resit. Also check your programme's deadline against the ~2 weeks a booked-and-graded attempt takes end to end.

How long do OMPT results stay valid?

Validity is a university rule, not a test rule. AUC states results are "generally valid for a period of two years"; RSM requires results "not older than 2 years". Check your own programme's page — don't assume an old pass still counts.

Is this the official OMPT website?

No. OMPT Trainer is an independent practice resource, not affiliated with SOWISO or the official exam. Retakes are booked on omptest.org; this page consolidates official retake policies with a source per row.
